Charleston County Sheriff's Office is the primary employer and the requirements of this agency will take precedence over any other employment.
Personnel working off-duty employment shall be bound by all policies and procedures of the agency and the laws of the State of South Carolina.
Deputies will not be permitted to engage in any employment which would be in violation of any county, state or federal law.
Sworn personnel engaged in off-duty employment of a police nature may be employed only within the legal boundaries of Charleston County.
An employer has no authority over Charleston County Sheriff's Office personnel and is restricted to providing only a general assignment of duties to be performed by the deputy.
All deputies of the Charleston County Sheriff's Office must be available at all times to respond to police emergencies. In an emergency, deputies will leave his/her private detail and respond as needed.
Deputies will not enforce or threaten to enforce any rule or order of an employer governing customer behavior on the employer's premises where the customer's conduct does not constitute a violation of law.
Deputies are not permitted to enforce entry into a facility or venue, perform searches, operate metal detectors, check identification and/or entry tickets, question persons about their presence within a business/venue, or perform record checks unless used to uncover violation of law.
DDeputies will not authorize the towing of vehicles from private property unless the vehicle is reported or presumed to be stolen.
The actions of a Charleston County Sheriff's deputy are limited to any breach of peace or violation of law.
Beginning February 1, 2019, Extra Duty Solutions will be managing our off duty program. The company charges a small administrative fee that is included in the pay. The breakdown is as follows:

Worker's Compensation coverage for each deputy is required. The employing company/individual will be charged 7% of the deputy pay for this coverage. This fee will be included in the total payment.
The Operations Bureau Commander or his designee, when necessary, will determine the number of sworn personnel required for the assignment.
The Sheriff or his designee reserves the right to assign supervisory responsibilities to smaller details if necessary.
Employees are not permitted to engage in employment with an establishment holding an "on premises" ABC license unless the principal business is the provision of lodging and/or the service of food and not entertainment unless otherwise approved by the Operations Bureau Commander or his designee.
Off-duty employment is voluntary and is done on the deputy's time off from the department.
The off-duty employer has the option of requesting a specific deputy sheriff.
The Operations Bureau Commander or designee may solicit any sworn member to fulfill available positions.
To cancel an off duty request, a minimum of 24 hours notice must be given to the Charleston County Sheriff's Office through the Extra Duty Solutions Company, otherwise the employer will be responsible for the fees associated with a minimum four hour contract. To cancel, please call Extra Duty Solutions at 843-628-5479.
If a deputy scheduled to work an off-duty assignment does not report for the assignment, the employer should notify Extra Duty Solutions at 843-628-5479.
